What is Poker?

Active ImagePoker is defined in the dictionary as “a game played with cards in which people try to win money from each other”. There are a lot of variations of poker but the basics are all the same. In poker you are trying to win money that is placed in the pot during multiple betting rounds. Or you can win by getting others to lay down (folding) there hands and thus giving you the pot by default.

If after the last betting round two or more players remain in the “hand”, the winner is the one that holds the best five card combination. The poker combinations are listed from the lowest (High Card) to the highest (Royal Flush).

Poker is usually played with minimum of two and a maximum or eleven players. Most Poker games are played with a full deck (52 cards) with no Jokers. It can be played with real money poker chips or matchsticks, although to really do the game justice losing a hand should cost you something and winning should gain you something. (It could just be that the loser has to do the dishes tonight). The stakes should always be agreed on before playing. This is a very basic definition of poker and is by no means claiming to be complete.
